The first 90 days: what to do, in order
Weeks 1 to 2: register the business and open the bank account. Weeks 2 to 4: build a supplier panel of two or three sources and get verified. Weeks 4 to 8: pick one niche, build three template itineraries and start quoting. Weeks 8 to 12: convert, deliver, and collect reviews and referrals from everyone you serve. The single most common failure is spending the first ninety days on branding instead of on supply and quoting.
Weeks 1 to 2: the boring, necessary part
- Register the entity. Proprietorship is fine to start
- PAN, current account, Shops and Establishments registration
- Udyam registration, which is free and takes ten minutes
- Talk to a CA once about your GST model before you invoice anybody
- Set up WhatsApp Business and a Google Business Profile the same week
Weeks 2 to 4: build your supply before you build your brand
- Apply to one broad B2B platform for flights and volume inventory
- Apply to one or two specialist wholesale desks for leisure and luxury
- Have your GST number ready. Verification is usually quick when it is
- Ask each supplier the checklist questions from the sourcing guide
- Get one live quote from each on the same property and dates, and compare. You will learn more in that hour than in a month of research
Weeks 4 to 8: pick a niche and start quoting
Choose one destination and one client type. Not three. Build three template itineraries at different price points, with real properties and real timings, and quote them until the wording is tight.
Quote everything that comes in, including enquiries you expect to lose. Early on, quoting practice is worth more than the booking. You are learning how long a quote takes, where your rates are weak and which questions clients actually ask.
- Keep every quote in one place so you can reuse the components
- Time your response. Aim under ten minutes during working hours
- Always get a second rate on anything over a few thousand rupees of margin
- Write down the reason for every loss. The pattern appears within twenty quotes
Weeks 8 to 12: deliver, then harvest
- Over-communicate during the trip. It costs nothing and it is what gets you recommended
- Ask every client for a Google review on the day they get home, not a week later
- Ask every client for one referral, explicitly. Most will give one if asked directly
- Log which property and which supplier performed, and which did not
- Go back to the two properties you sold most and start the direct contract conversation
The habits that separate survivors
| Habit | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Second-sourcing every leisure rate | The single highest-return five minutes in the business |
| Replying in under ten minutes | Most Indian clients message several agents. First useful reply usually wins |
| Quoting the season honestly up front | Stops the December conversation where the price has doubled |
| Writing the cancellation policy into every quote | Prevents you absorbing a supplier's non-refundable window for free |
| Asking for the review and the referral every time | Compounds, and costs nothing |
| Tracking working capital weekly | Agencies with plenty of bookings still fail here |
What not to do in the first 90 days
- A logo and brand exercise before your first booking
- A large website before you have traffic
- Paid advertising before your response time is fixed
- Offering every destination in India
- Taking a booking at 3% margin to stay in the conversation
