Popular travel destinations in India, from a selling point of view

The short answer

The destinations that sell most reliably for Indian travel agents are Goa, Rajasthan, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kashmir and the wildlife parks of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Each has a narrow season band, and availability rather than price is what loses bookings in the peak weeks. Plan contracting and client conversations around the long weekend calendar rather than evenly across the year.

The destinations that carry the market

DestinationBest monthsSells toWhat an agent should know
GoaNovember to FebruaryCouples, families, groups, MICEPeak fortnight from 20 December is a different market. Contract early
RajasthanOctober to MarchHeritage, weddings, inbound, luxuryThe deepest luxury inventory in India. Summer is genuinely difficult
KeralaOctober to MarchHoneymoon, wellness, slow travelBackwaters and hills combine into a natural five to seven night itinerary
Himachal PradeshMarch to June, December for snowFamilies, young groups, adventureTwo distinct seasons with different products and different clients
UttarakhandMarch to June, September to NovemberWellness, wildlife, pilgrimage, familiesCorbett runs to park closure dates. Check them before quoting
Kashmir and LadakhApril to October, winter for snowHoneymoon, photography, adventureHighly seasonal and demand is sensitive to news cycles
Wildlife parks (MP and Rajasthan)October to MarchFamilies, photographers, inboundSafari permits and core zone rules matter more than the room
Coorg, Chikmagalur, OotyOctober to FebruarySouth Indian weekend marketShort lead times. Friday enquiries for Saturday stays are normal
North EastOctober to AprilSlow travel, photographyPermits and logistics are the work, not the hotel
AndamansNovember to AprilHoneymoon, divingFerry and connectivity constraints shape the whole itinerary

Season bands are the thing new agents get wrong

Indian hotel rates do not move smoothly. They step. A property in Goa can be priced at one number on 18 December and at close to double on 22 December, and the room is identical.

Two consequences. First, always re-check a rate when a client shifts dates, even by a few days, because you may have crossed a band boundary. Second, quote the season honestly up front. A client told in October that Christmas week costs what it costs will accept it. The same client told in December, after being quoted an off-peak number, will not.

Long weekends do more damage than any other factor

Indian leisure demand concentrates into a handful of dates. The long weekends around Gandhi Jayanti, Dussehra, Diwali, Christmas, Republic Day, Holi and the April cluster account for a disproportionate share of the year's bookings.

What loses those bookings is almost never price. It is availability. An agent who secures allocation six to eight weeks out sells at a good margin. An agent scrambling ten days out is paying whatever is left and making nothing.

Worth knowing. Build a calendar of the next twelve months of long weekends and work backwards from each one. This is the single highest-leverage planning exercise in a domestic travel business.

The practical selling rule

Know two or three destinations properly rather than twenty superficially. A client can tell within one message whether you have been somewhere or read about it, and the second kind of agent competes only on price.

Depth also compounds commercially. Sell the same region repeatedly and properties start recognising your name, which is the beginning of a direct contract.

When you need hotel rates

We are a wholesale desk, not a course and not a platform. 912 properties contracted directly across 30 Indian states, net rates to verified travel businesses, no joining fee and no minimum volume. Ask us anything about sourcing, including whether we are the right answer for your booking.

Ask the desk on WhatsApp Trade only. No joining fee, no subscription, no minimum volume. We never sell to consumers.

Frequently asked

Which Indian destination is easiest for a new travel agent to sell?
Goa and the short drive-to hill destinations near large cities, because demand is constant, lead times are short and clients need less convincing. Rajasthan and Kerala carry higher values but longer sales cycles.
When is peak season in India?
Broadly October to March for most of the country, with the Himalayan states inverting to March to June. The Diwali and Christmas to New Year weeks are the sharpest peaks and need to be contracted months ahead.
How far ahead should I book for a long weekend?
Six to eight weeks for good inventory at a workable rate. Inside ten days you are paying for what is left, which is rarely what a client wants.
Which destination has the best luxury hotel inventory?
Rajasthan, by a distance. Palaces, forts and heritage properties there have no real equivalent elsewhere in India, which is why it anchors most luxury and inbound itineraries.
