Tourism industry trends in India, and what they mean for your business
Domestic travel dominates Indian tourism by a factor of several hundred to one. Ministry of Tourism data records about 2,510 million domestic tourist visits against about 9.2 million foreign tourist arrivals. Any new travel business in India should plan around domestic demand first, treat inbound as a specialist add-on, and expect leisure and diaspora travel to make up the bulk of foreign arrivals.
The single most important ratio
Ministry of Tourism figures record about 2,510 million domestic tourist visits in 2023 against about 9.2 million foreign tourist arrivals. That is a ratio of roughly 270 to 1.
New agencies consistently over-index on inbound because it feels more glamorous and the per-booking values are higher. The volume is not there for a business without established overseas relationships. Domestic leisure is where a new Indian travel business finds repeat customers, short sales cycles and bookings that do not depend on a visa.
Who the foreign visitors actually are
From the Monthly Tourism Snapshot, January 2026, the picture of inbound travel is consistent and worth knowing even if you do not sell inbound.
| Top source markets | Share |
|---|---|
| USA | 19.5% |
| UK | 12.1% |
| Canada | 8.0% |
| Australia | 6.9% |
| Bangladesh | 4.3% |
Why they come
The diaspora share is the number most people miss. Close to a third of foreign arrivals are people of Indian origin visiting family. They do not buy standard inbound packages, but they do buy domestic legs, weddings, pilgrimage circuits and short luxury breaks once they are here. That is reachable demand for a domestic operator.
| Purpose of visit | Share |
|---|---|
| Leisure and holiday | 43.2% |
| Indian diaspora | 31.6% |

| Medical | 4.8% |
| Other | 10.2% |
Where they land
Foreign exchange earnings from tourism ran at about Rs 31,200 crore in the same month, or about USD 3.44 billion. The concentration at Delhi and Mumbai shapes almost every inbound itinerary in the country.
| Entry port | Share |

| Delhi | 32.5% |
| Mumbai | 20.1% |
| Bengaluru | 8.6% |
| Chennai | 8.4% |
| Kochi | 5.2% |
Structural shifts worth planning around
- Short-haul domestic breaks are growing faster than long holidays. Two and three night trips within driving distance are now a category rather than an afterthought
- Long weekends concentrate demand into a handful of dates. Contracting and cash flow should both be planned around the holiday calendar
- Experience is displacing sightseeing. Clients increasingly pay for what they will do rather than what they will see
- Tier 2 and tier 3 cities are generating outbound leisure demand that used to be metro only, and most of it is underserved
- Weddings and MICE have become a larger share of hotel revenue, which changes availability for FIT bookings in peak weeks
- AI assistants are absorbing the research and comparison layer, which compresses generic agency work and leaves judgment-led work intact
What to do with this
Build your first year around domestic leisure in one or two regions you can genuinely know. Add inbound only when you have an overseas partner who sends you business, not before.
Plan capacity around the long weekend calendar rather than evenly across the year. Contract or secure inventory early for the dates everyone wants, because availability, not price, is what loses those bookings.
